Credit card statements work too: purchases count as spending, payments to the card as money in, and we check our reading against the previous and new balance printed on the statement.

Applications that ask you to connect your bank can only support banks their data provider has built a connection for. That's why almost all of them stop at US, UK, Canada and a bit of Europe. We read the PDF your bank already gives you, so there's no connection to build and no country restriction. A statement from a rural co-operative bank works in the same way a Chase statement does.

When one of these names is printed on your statement, the report is labelled with it. The reading itself is the same for every bank: one reader that finds dated rows with amounts and checks them against the balances printed on the statement. A bank that is not listed here is read exactly the same way.
