Getting the PDF from Monzo

In the Monzo app

1. Open the Monzo app and tap 'Home'.
2. Tap the three dots below your card.
3. Tap 'Bank statements'.
4. Choose the date range.
5. Pick PDF as the format (CSV and QIF are offered too). The statement includes your Pots.

What we read from the statement

A bank statement PDF normally shows the account and the statement period, an opening and a closing balance, and one row per transaction with a date, a description and an amount, often with a running balance. From that we build the breakdown: where the money went by category, what repeats, and totals in and out. The report is labelled Monzo when that name is printed near the top of the statement.

Dates and amounts on statements from the UK

• Dates written as 05/04/2024, 05-04-24, 05.04.2024, 2024-04-05, 05 Apr 2024, 05-Apr-24 or Apr 5, 2024. A date with a month name but no year (05 Apr) takes its year from the statement header.
• Numeric dates are read day first when the statement itself shows it, with dates such as 25/04/2024 where the first number can only be a day; statements from the UK are normally written that way. A statement whose dates all fall on the 1st to the 12th of the month gives no such clue and is read month first, so check the dates on the report for a short period.
• Amounts with two decimal places, such as 1,234.56 or 1234.56.
• Money out marked with a minus sign (before or after the number), brackets, or a DR suffix; CR marks money in. A statement with separate debit, credit and balance columns is read column by column.

Known limitations

Password-protected PDFs

We cannot open a PDF that asks for a password: the upload fails with "Could not read this PDF". Open it with the password, save or print an unlocked copy as PDF, and upload that. When Monzo closes an account, it emails a password-protected statement of the full history and sends the password by text message.

Scanned statements

A scan or photo saved as PDF has no text layer, so we read it with OCR on our own server, up to the first 10 pages. OCR can misread a digit; the report says when it was used, so check its totals. A PDF downloaded from online banking is always more reliable.

Up to 25 MB per file and the first 60 pages.

Dates without a year, whole-number amounts

A row whose date is only day and month in numbers (05/04) is not read, and neither is a row whose amount has no decimal part (150000 rather than 150000.00). If most of your rows look like that, the upload will say no transactions were found.

No layout made for this bank

There is no reader built specially for Monzo. One general reader handles every bank, and the report checks what it found against the opening and closing balances printed on the statement, and says so when they do not add up.

Questions about Monzo statements

Do you connect to my Monzo account?

No. You download the statement from Monzo yourself and upload the PDF. We never ask for your online banking login and cannot see your account.

Is my Monzo statement stored?

No. The PDF is read in memory and never written to disk. If you buy an export, the rows for the download are kept in your private session so the button works, and are deleted when the session expires, after at most 14 days.

Can I convert a Monzo statement to Excel or CSV?

Yes. Reading one statement on screen is free. Downloading it as a spreadsheet (a CSV file that Excel opens) needs a statement pack or a plan.

Is a Monzo statement PDF password-protected?

When Monzo closes an account, it emails a password-protected statement of the full history and sends the password by text message. We cannot open a locked PDF, so open it with the password, save an unlocked copy, and upload that.

Which currency will the report use?

A statement that prints GBP outside the transaction rows is read as pounds sterling. Amounts written with £ are read as pounds sterling. If the statement prints no currency at all, the report uses pounds sterling, the home currency of Monzo, and says that is where it came from.
